Proposed Green Hydrogen Facility

Bowen Green Hydrogen Company seeks to develop a Green Hydrogen facility in Bowen.

This location is ideal with access to an abundance of existing resources and infrastructure to support production, the supply chain (ports, shipping, road and rail) and ease of access to the immediate market.

There are currently development plans for a number of solar and winds farms nearby that will supply the green energy required for the Project. The other major input required for a hydrogen project on the driest continent on earth, is a reliable, secure water source. The Project will be supplied with abundant water from the Bowen Water Pipeline Project, with capacity of up to 100,000 ML from one of Australia’s most reliable water sources, the Burdekin River. This fresh water source means that the Project does not need to desalinate its water requirements, which would otherwise create hypersalinated water that is both difficult and expensive to dispose of.

Current State

  • Land has been secured adjacent to the expanding local horticultural industry, nearby to the Bowen Pipeline Water Project, the train refuelling site, train line, Bruce Highway and high voltage electricity lines. The site is located over 1 km away from the nearest dwellings.

  • Stakeholder engagement has commenced at the Local, State and Commonwealth levels.

  • Preparation of the reporting required for the Whitsunday Regional Council application have commenced.

  • 3 major local horticultural producers have expressed strong interest in purchasing the green hydrogen.

  • International electrolyser manufacturers have provided details for delivery and pricing.

  • Australian engineering firms have provided fee proposals.

  • Operational and Financial modelling supply negotiations will commence shortly.

Staged Production Growth

BGH will undertake a staged approach to market supply of green hydrogen and will expand into new markets as the potential uses of this non-polluting fuel are fully understood by business and the community. Hydrogen fuelled farm machinery and commercial vehicles will contribute to the transition to clean energy throughout the Australian horticulture and fruit growing industries.

The objectives of this project are to stage production growth as follows:

  • Phase 1: Local Farm Supply. Create the World’s first fossil fuel free farming region whereby all diesel and petrol are removed from the on-farm planting, growing and harvesting processes. 3 national horticultural companies producing nearly 100 million kilograms of vegetables and fruit yearly have expressed strong interest in becoming the first to utilise the green hydrogen – farm machinery, tractors, forklifts, vehicles.

  • Phase 2: Expand the supply of the green hydrogen to the trucking and logistics companies moving some 250 million kilograms of vegetables and fruit to the major supermarkets of Woolworths, Coles and Aldi and their stores in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Adelaide (some 2,500 kms).

  • Phase 3: Expand supply for the 16 national and international companies operating within a short distance from the facilities location, to satisfy their needs and obligations to comply with sustainability and net zero emissions targets for environmental and reputational risk management – buses, trains, boats, tourist resorts, logistics, packaging and remote electricity generation.

  • Phase 4: Potentially supply to other industrial users along the inland rail line to assist industry to meet their 2030 carbon reduction targets.
